The Florida Keys are beautiful, popular, and big. Very, very big. There are 137 square miles to explore, and what better way to do so than on a jet ski? Jet skis let you control your pace, giving the option to stop off at any location desired, examine certain areas of interest more closely, or at the very least have a more adventurous expedition than a tour boat might give. Jet skis offer all the excitement and adrenaline of a high-pressure, high-powered sport with the open-air exposure of a bicycle.
Instead of covering the entire area of the Keys, though, we're going to focus on Key West jet skis and what it has to offer.
Rules and Regulations
First, before you decide to go, there are a few things you should know. To ride a jet ski, a person must be at least 16 years of age or older. To rent a jet ski, you must be over 18. Anyone under that age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
When renting a jet ski, you have to present a valid photo ID. Also, if born after 1988, you need to present an approved boater's safety certificate. If you don't have one, no worries; a temporary one can usually be obtained at check in.
You should arrive half an hour before your scheduled departure time, or an hour before if you require a temporary certificate. Don't party too hard the day before, though; anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol won't be allowed to rent a jet ski or participate in any tours. And save the jet ski riding for after little Junior is born; if you are pregnant, you aren't allowed to ride, both for your safety and the safety of the baby. Any additional medical problems that may put you or others at risk can also disqualify you from eligiblity, to be determined upon arrival.
No more than three people on a jet ski, or a total of 460 lbs, either!
A note about these regulations: they vary by rental company. The majority of companies have nearly the same rules, but in some cases the age requirements might be slightly different.
Key West Jet Ski Rentals
When it comes to jet skis, there are two major options: individual rentals and tours. If you want free reign over where you go, and have experience with jet skis, the individual rentals are right for you. There are more than ten companies to choose from for jet ski rentals.
However, many companies that offer individual rentals require that you ride in a designated riding area, and rent by the hour. The upside to this is that the designated riding area sometimes includes the entire coast line of Key West, so you can make a complete trip around the island on your ski. More than one hour at a time can be rented, as well, but rates can be high, sometimes more than $100 per hour. The bright side is that gas is included in the rental, there are often no charges for a second person, and many companies even offer free showers after your ride to wash off the salt that will undoubtedly be clinging to you.
The great thing about individual rentals is that you aren't as closely supervised. When on a tour that caters more towards sightseeing and beginners, you have to keep up with the group, but alone? You're able to open up and fly through the waters and high speeds, tasting the sea spray and the wind in your hair.
Key West Jet Ski Tours
Jet ski tours are ideal for families and those not looking for adrenaline rushes. These tours are guided by professionals who know the area, and tend to be a more educational, yet fun, side of water sports. The tour guides demonstrate how to properly operate and ride a jet ski while maintaining a slow enough speed that anyone can feel welcome.
The guides will take the tour groups to areas of interest all over the area, and usually a few 'hidden' spots that aren't very well known publicly. Almost all tours offer the chance at some point to ride fast if you want, but it's a purely optional experience. Most tours last from one to two hours, sometimes more, and traverse the circumference of the island. They're a great way to view wildlife and sea life that you might otherwise miss.
Due to their size, jet skis are able to go places other water vehicles can't go, which offers a unique experience unattainable by boats or yachts.
Key West has much to offer anyone, whether their interests lie in the historic side of things, or in the “kick off your shoes” and relax side of things. Jet skiing is one of the most popular past times in Key West, and if you are planning a trip to the area, be sure not to miss it.
